Running economy is influenced by many factors, including cadence, posture, ground-contact time, coordination, leg stiffness, strength, power, and how efficiently the body uses oxygen. Individual anatomy, training history, speed, and fatigue can also affect running mechanics.
For that reason, trying to exaggerate hip extension by consciously pushing the leg farther backward can be counterproductive. A runner may change pelvic position or create unnecessary tension without improving propulsion.
The better goal is to develop adequate hip mobility, strength, and power while allowing the movement to fit naturally into the entire stride. Running form works as a coordinated system rather than a collection of isolated positions.

Exercises such as squats, deadlift variations, step-ups, split squats, lunges, and hip thrusts can build strength through the hips and lower body. As an athlete develops an appropriate strength base, faster movements such as jumps and other carefully selected power exercises may help train the ability to generate force quickly.
Single-leg exercises are especially relevant because running repeatedly places the body over one supporting leg. They can challenge hip strength, pelvic control, balance, and coordination in ways that resemble some of the demands encountered during running.
